In light of everything that has happened with COVID-19, it makes one wonder, “when will things get back to normal?’ How long do we have to endure this? I know I miss being outside, especially during the spring season! Every year, I’d look forward to hearing chirping Red Robins or seeing the first blooming of wild flowers, but these last few days have been pretty isolating. Don’t get me wrong, I fully appreciate the extra time I’ve had to focus on my studies and hobbies; I’ve created so many art pieces, I have enough to launch my own art show once COVID-19 is over!
But that is not what I’m here to blog. I’m here to share that although the entire world is at a standstill, God is allowing us to get back to the basics of life, aka, HIM, our first love! I have been taking this time to spend with God, fast, and pray for more than COVID-19 despite the fact that it has roughly effecting so many people! This has allowed me to excessively pray for my family and churches. It easy to get caught up with “going to church” and even doing church, but are you truly living for God, do you really have faith in who God says He is? Do you believe God will do what he said he would do? Do you really know who God is? Do you really trust God? Or were you caught up in the ritual? Do you find yourself getting distracted by what you see on social media or the news? Are you trusting God will provide and sustain you and your families during the quarantine? Are you grounded in faith or are you grounded in logic?
Before you start considering my question overload, let’s take a look at Abraham, the man of great faith. Abraham was the ideal trope for men of faith in the Bible. God promised that He would make Abraham a man of many great nations and Abraham believed Him. God promised him that his lineage would be as great as the stars in the sky and Abraham believed him. He promised would give him a son by a specific time and (have you guessed it) Abraham believed Him. Abraham’s wife, Sarah on the other hand needed a little more faith, but we’ll save her story for another time.
If you read Genesis 22, you will see that God tested Abraham’s faith. After God gave Abraham his promised son, Isaac, God told him to take the child with him to the mountain to be sacrificed. Yep, God ask Abraham to kill his only son. Surprisingly without any question, Abraham, prepared to go to the mountain to worship God, taking his son with him. But something stood out to me as I read this passage. I looked at verse 5 and saw that Abraham told his servants where he was going, and he told them “we will be right back”. Then in verse 8, when this confused little boy asked his father where is the sheep we’ll use to be sacrificed, Abraham replied, “God will provide the sheep for the burnt offering” (NLT). Abraham spoke in faith, based on the previous promises that God made to him! He believed the original promises of God therefore He spoke ton his situation, he spoke IN FAITH during the test!
In spite of what was happening around him, Abraham knew that God was going to keep his covenant. He knew God was going to be a blessing to be a father of many nations through his promised child, Isaac! Key phrase, HE KNEW GOD! Since He knew God, he was confident that God would keep his word! Low and behold, if you keep reading through to verse 11-13 God sent an angel to stop Abraham from sacrificing his son. God provided a ram in the bush ton be sacrificed instead. LOOK AT GOD! He provided for him!
This test did not only verify Abrahams trust but also his obedience. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been him as he tied his son up and laid him on the alter as a sacrifice. Verse 2, clearly stated how Abraham loved his son VERY much, so this must have been difficult, yet he still obeyed God.
How many of you are really willing to sacrifice or give up something that we really love for the sake of obeying God? Are you willing to obey God to do something, even if it might break your heart? Look at verses 16-18, God told Abraham, “…Because you have obeyed me and have not withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies. And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed –all because you obeyed me.”
You can’t show your faith without being obedient! Sometime God will test our faith to see if we put things over Him, like our situation, our circumstances (i.e COVID-19) to see if we really trust him.
If I can be honest, I’m inspired by Abraham’s faith and confidence in God, really! Even Paul referenced Abraham’s faith in Romans 4:17, ““As it is written: ‘I have made you a father of many nations.’ [Abraham] is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.”
We have to believe that God is the one who creates things out of nothing. He is the waymaker, miracle worker, promise keeper, light in the darkness, our God! My God! That is who you are! That is who He is! (Shout out to Sinach for singing such an awesome worship song!) No matter what is happening around us! We need to spend more quality time with the Lord, remind ourselves of His promises and believe His word! Do you believe?
Hebrews 11:11Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Dear Beloved Father please help me to trust you during these hard time. God I pray that in spite of what is going on in the world, I will trust in you! May this season take my faith up to the next level! God I pray that you will keep those heavenly affected by COVID-19 (medical professional, those who have been infected, or lost loved ones to this disease), please help them and comfort them during this crisis. Lord I pray as you reset the world's focus on you, I pray that we will not lose hope our faith in you. May we fully trust that you will do everything that you said you would do! Dear God, I ask that you would please send your healing power and heal our land and revive us again! In Jesus Name!
